Princess and the Frog (2009)

Got in on the epic “Princess and the Frog + Toy Story 1 & 2 Blu-Ray for $11” deal. Wanted to write more than 140 characters after watching the former last night.

It’s set in the 1920s, but Princess and the Frog could easily take place in the modern day resulting in something that feels both contemporary and classic at the same time. Great characterization with both the leads and the side characters. Louis (a jazz playing alligator)* and Tiana’s ditzy friend are standouts. The score fleshed out New Orleans and the musical numbers gave the movie a Pixar vibe due to Newman (though the songs are less memorable Menken’s). Awesome visuals round it out; major double takes throughout.

All in all, I enjoyed it more than any other animated feature from last year. It didn’t do too well at the box office which is unfortunate. 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.

*I want, no need, a Louis plush.
